The read
Myanmar's main tourist circuit still draws expert solo women, but armed conflict and arbitrary detention of foreigners are current, documented realities in 2025.
What holds up
- Entry requires an eVisa applied for in advance; most nationalities are granted 28 days and can only enter through Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airports.
- The economy is entirely cash-dependent, US dollars in crisp, unmarked notes are the practical currency; credit cards fail even where terminals exist.
- Women-run weaving workshops at Inle Lake (a large highland lake in Shan State) and tea shops throughout Bagan and Yangon offer direct, meaningful exchanges on the main tourist circuit.
What to weigh
- The US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Singapore all currently advise against all travel: armed conflict, IED explosions averaging six per month in Yangon, widespread arbitrary detention of foreigners, and the March 2025 magnitude 7.7 earthquake near Mandalay have all worsened conditions since 2024.
- Internet access is unreliable by design: as of early 2025, 138 townships were under state-imposed internet shutdowns, mobile data speeds collapsed by 78% year-on-year, and connectivity can disappear without notice, offline maps and downloaded guides are not optional.
Myanmar sits between India, China, Thailand, and Laos in mainland Southeast Asia. The landscape is striking: thousands of ancient brick temples scattered across the plains of Bagan, the golden Shwedagon Pagoda rising over Yangon, floating gardens and stilt-house villages on Inle Lake, and hill stations in the Shan State where tea grows on every slope. The food is its own thing: tea leaf salad, mohinga (fish noodle soup eaten for breakfast), and Shan noodles. The political situation following the 2021 coup is complex and ongoing. Check your government's travel advisory before booking and understand which areas are accessible. The main tourist circuit (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake) has continued to receive travellers, but flexibility is essential.
