Tofo is one of the few places where whale shark and manta ray encounters are almost guaranteed (Oct-Mar). Dive operators are PADI-certified and experienced. Even snorkellers can spot mantas from the surface on good days.

Getting to Tofo
Fly to Inhambane Airport (IBL) from Maputo or Johannesburg. From Inhambane town, it is 22km to Tofo via a sandy road (40 minutes by vehicle). Arrange a transfer through your accommodation.

Chapas to Inhambane
Local minibuses run between Tofo and Inhambane town throughout the day. The ride takes 30-40 minutes. Useful for visiting the old town, cathedral, and dhow harbour.

How the day runs
Ocean scans for whale sharks start at 7:00 from the dive shops. Dive boats head out by 8:00. The beach is quiet early, with fishermen launching boats at dawn. Fresh bread appears at the small markets by 7:00. Morning yoga sessions run at several guesthouses.
Book your ocean safari or dive the evening before. Boats have limited spots.
Return from morning dives. Lunch at beach bars like Dino's or Casa Barry. The beach fills with swimmers and surfers. Snorkelling off the rocks at the southern end of the beach is good at high tide. Afternoon light is beautiful for the beach walk toward Tofinho.
The walk from Tofo beach to Tofinho point takes about 30 minutes along the sand.
Sunset from the Tofinho viewpoint is the daily gathering. Dinner at restaurants along the main road. Some spots have live music on weekends. The social scene is relaxed and mixed: locals, expats, travellers. Thursdays at Mozambeat are popular.
