Koh Tao is the most popular place in Southeast Asia to learn to dive, and that is what brings most visitors. PADI Open Water courses run four days, and many schools include accommodation. Sairee Beach is the main strip with dive shops, restaurants, and bars. Mae Haad is where the ferry arrives. Chalok Baan Kao on the south side is quieter.
The island is small enough to walk between main areas, though most people rent a scooter. The roads are steep and can be rough, especially after rain. Walking at night along Sairee is fine, but bring a flashlight for the unlit paths between the main road and the beach.

Dive schools are the social infrastructure
The island revolves around dive schools. Enrolling in a course (Open Water takes 3-4 days) is the fastest way to meet people. Schools host dinners, bar nights, and boat trips for their students.

The roads are genuinely steep
Several roads on the island are nearly vertical with poor surfaces. Scooter accidents are the most common injury on Koh Tao. Walk steep sections if in doubt. The road to Tanote Bay is particularly steep.

Small island, small community
You will see the same people repeatedly. The dive instructor and bar staff communities are tight-knit. Word travels fast. This creates a village-like atmosphere.

Medical facilities are basic
Koh Tao has clinics but no hospital. Serious injuries or illness require evacuation to Koh Samui by speedboat. Make sure your travel insurance is active and covers remote islands.

How the day runs
Diving, snorkeling, beach
Dive boats depart between 7-9am. Snorkeling trips leave from Mae Haad and Sairee. The east coast bays (Tanote, Mango Bay) are best in the morning when water is calmest.
Viewpoints, free diving, relaxing
John-Suwan viewpoint and the various lookout points on the south side are afternoon activities. Free diving courses run throughout the day. Most divers do a second dive in the afternoon.
Sairee bars, sunset, social
Sairee Beach bars line the sand with sunset views. Dive schools host social nights for their students. The bar scene is lively but not aggressive. Night diving trips go out on some evenings.
