The read
- What it feels like
- This is the Namibia you came to see. Dune 45 glows orange at sunrise. Deadvlei is dead trees on cracked white clay, it looks unreal because it is. The scale of the landscape makes you feel very small.
- Who is around
- Photographers chasing first light, self-drive overlanders, and guided safari groups.
- On foot
- Dune climbing involves walking on deep, shifting sand. No paths. The walk from the 4x4 drop-off to Deadvlei is about 1 kilometre across a flat clay pan.
- After dark
- The park gate closes at sunset. Lodge areas have dining facilities. The night sky here is among the clearest in Africa, with virtually no light pollution. Stargazing is extraordinary.
